In Extension 3, Khutsong, the water crisis continues to worsen as the local reservoir, which has been empty and unused for many years, remains out of operation. During an oversight visit, Welile and Carl observed firsthand the hardships residents are enduring. Water pressure in the area is incredibly low, leaving many without a reliable supply, if any at all. This lack of essential water access is exacerbating the suffering of residents, who are already grappling with the broader water shortages affecting Merafong.
The oversight conducted at the Khutsong reservoir is a stark reminder of the ongoing failures in infrastructure management, compounding the impact of the water crisis that has seen Rand Water reduce supplies by 20% due to the municipality's unpaid debt. This reservoir, if operational, could provide much-needed relief to the community. Instead, residents are left with little hope as we face the growing possibility of a 'day zero' scenario.
In light of these observations, we will be asking critical questions in both Council and the Legislature to address the state of the reservoir and demand accountability for the ongoing water pressure issues in Khutsong. This is a crucial part of our efforts to resolve the broader water crisis in Merafong, which continues to affect thousands of residents daily.
